No need to inherit the title and then renounce it. Actually that is not possible. Only to cede it. But lady Mae could simply renounce to apply for it and the next in line could do it. Of course, there must be an agreement between the siblings. Even if inherited by her brother, she could challenge the succession before the courts. With or without money, thats a private issue.
And any Lady Maes descendants could do it the next 40 years after the succession. Previous Message
Yes, I suppose so. But the context here is a bit more complicated than most. For one thing, as Manuel points out earlier in this thread, accession to an hereditary title is not automatic upon the death of the current holder, and the inheritor must assert their present legal right to the title through the Spanish ministry of information. So in the case of the Ciuidad Rodrigo title, the duchess who succeeds in future must, even if intending to later relinquish same, first assert her succession to the title through said ministry. The next step of course is that she then relinquishes the CR title to her brother through a separate document - and presumably that too must be filed with the Spanish ministry of information so they are aware at least she took this step. Then the Duke of Wellington must finally step forward to the ministry of information to assert his succession to the CR ducal title. What remains a question in my mind is if any financial transaction is actually necesary necessary since in fact the C.R. title as no property or estate entailed on it in Spain. What do you think? The 7th Duchess's renunciation was compensated financially by her uncle, the Duke of W. When Lady Mae succeeds, events will depend less on "the family" than on, as in the previous instance, first, whether the D of Wellington wants the Spanish Dukedom and, secondly, whether Lady Mae wants to retain it, or would be prepared to relinquish it (with or without compensation).
