I have seen commentators expressing surprise at some of the absences -- no representation from the closely-related family of Belgium in particular, and a different "level" of representation from some families than had been expected. Two of the deceased's sisters were represented by their daughters due to health issues, again according to Marlene.
Link doesn't work on my end. But I read the cathedral was "very full"...and perhaps that fact was an eye-opener for these Aostas to realize that their "cousins" (three/four times remoed) have such a solid following still inside Italy...
At any rate, the Spanish Royal Family and the Aosta branch of the Savoy family were indeed represented at the funeral. Queen Sofia was present, as were the Duke and Duchess of Aosta (photo of the Aosta couple here: https://www.gettyimages.de/detail/nachrichtenfoto/princess-olga-of-savoy-aosta-and-prince-aimone-duke-of-nachrichtenfoto/2000076514 ).
Then you are different becaue you are relying only on your own subjective perception of public figures who I would certainly not be interested in if they were as you say "irrelevant" and "non-existing". In fact, in the bigger picture of human history and European history, anything is possible and anything is therefore relevant - did Cromwell know that Charles II would follow him? Did the republicans in Spain in the 1930's know that a boy called Juan Carlos would one day be king? So history is always unpredictable, and everything is in fact "relevant" if you prefer to be objective and open-minded and take into account the twists and turns of past history. No one would care about a once-a-year little meet-up of 3 throne claimants in France if in fact each of them did not equally believe their living identity was in fact still based in their existing claim to a French throne. In the wider world too - just last month, there were riotous demonstrations in Nepal for the return of the king there. My point there again being, that history and royal history is not predictable, and again that makes these non-reigning figures "relevant" - otherwise, you are just fixated by people who are has-beens that just belong in a social column, and I admit that's certainly not my "interest" at all.
I guess we are very different because i look more to how people behave rather than putting their name under irrelevant claims to non-existing thrones.
Im glad in France the younger generation can be civil and have been seen on events pleasantly chatting with each other respecting different views on succession but joining together in celebrating their dynastic past. I hope in Italy we will see the same with the two branches of the Savoias.
Who? I suppose I'm less impressed by superficial gestures than by the reality of the ongoing fact that both persons claim to be head of house of Savoia and rightful claimant to the non-existent Italian throne...
Marlene posted a kind condolence message from the Duke of Aosta. I get the idea the two younger men are not as acrimonious as their fathers were.
It would seem logical at this point that he will be interred where his own late father also chose to be laid - with their earliest ancestors in the Haute-Savoie. I suppose it's also posssible that the late Umberto II did not have the optioin at the time to be interred with other deceased Savoia kings in Rome, but I don't know if the lifting of the ban by the republican government in years since has changed the situation regarding burial. As far as who will be present at any funeral ceremonnies, wherever those do happen, you can probably be certain that you won't see any representatives from the Spanish RF or the immediate Aosta family present...for obvious past controversies...
Is anything known about the funeral plans?
Additionally, another short article.
