“ this couple has a lot of baggage." And this couple does. This seemed like a mismatch in some ways from the beginning”
I understood it as a general comment, not as a personal opinion.
No intention to criticise your recollections..
I don't come on this board to pronounce on Spanish public opinion. I was talking about my own recollection, not "rewriting history" or claiming that everyone reacted to the two weddings the way I did.
Well, at that time and until the Noos scandal, Iñaki was the perfect husband and son-in-law, while Jaime was just a freak.
I understand that the marriage was welcomed in Spain, and that it seemed very romantic to see the daughter of the King marry a well-known athlete. I'm just thinking of my own reaction at the time. I didn't feel that way about Infanta Elena's marriage, and that didn't work out either, so my reactions are by no means infallible!
A,mismatch from the beginning? Not at all. Rewritting history has become a common practice , I am afraid. Not a comment to you, but now everybody seems to have foreseen it from the beginning.
When the couple married, most of the public and political opinion was practically unanimous applauding this match. The King’s daughter marrying an olympian, a sportsman, tall, blonde and with blue eyes. Born in the Basque Country and living in Barcelona. Impossible to find a bettet match, personally and politically. The couple settled in Barcelona and were like the representatives of the Royal House in Catalonia. The President of Catalonia even referred to her as “la nostra Infanta”, our Infanta.
Of course, everything changed after the Noos scandal and now with the new relationship.
The topic here is a sad one, but I did enjoy learning the "loaded backpack" expression. I suppose our equivalent is "this couple has a lot of baggage." And this couple does. This seemed like a mismatch in some ways from the beginning. I suppose, however, it is difficult for anyone to marry into a Royal Family -- it was even tough for a born-royal like the late Duke of Edinburgh to find his path. For Inaki and Cristina, the outcome was disaster.
The use of the word is just a mere euphemism.
If there is something behind the photos to force the outcome? Who knows? This couple carries indeed a very loaded backpack, as we say in Spain. Everything can be possible. R.
Interrupt suggests something temporary not permanent.
But indeed not before time.
I wonder was the magazine exposé arranged to force Cristina's hand?
Infanta Cristina has waited too long, imo. R.
