Well, I suppose she meant that the Bourbons ( a male branch of the Capets ), when they inherited Spain, had been Kings since the IX century. The Hannovers, when they inherited the UK were only electors. The SCG simply Dukes.
In terms of “prestige”, they were not comparable. And the Hesse-Battenbergs, well... as you say.
The content of the discussion has nothing to do with what you "seem to recall". The discussion was about the religious problems of the wedding, not about suitability.
Queen Frederika indeed said she was a Queen, and VE replied that she was too, and that JC was "nobody", but a Bourbon, decending from 17 Kings and, compared to that, both of them were simply "parvenues".
A surprising remark, if true, from Queen VE. After all, via their mutual descent from Queen Victoria alone, she and Queen Frederika could count just as many kings and queens in their ancestry as Juan Carlos (going back through all the Hanoverians, Stuarts, Tudors and Plantagenets etc.) so hardly 'parvenues'. Or maybe she was thinking of the Battenberg side of her ancestry?
