Despite there was a Leonor I Queen of Navarre, I expect there will be a future Leonor I of Spain.
Wonder if, when in Navarre, she would call herself Leonor II.
It has already been mentioned that the higher of the English or Scottish numbers is used but across Europe there is no set standard for reckoning the regnal numbers of monarchs.
Some countries started back at ‘one’ when united to another under a new name (like the Two Sicilies).
Others carried with the numbering of one state when invested with another title (Prussia and the German Empire with Frederick III).
In Italy, I believe the number used was based on headship of the House of Savoy, irrespective of the highest title held.
In Sweden, mythological kings artificially boosted the regnal numbers.
In Hanover, there was George V of Hanover, continuing the British numbering despite being only the third Hanoverian king of that name.
In Reuss, the men were all named Henry and all were given ordinals in order of their births, one branch resetting each century.
And on and on…
