According to the historical record, Crown Prince Ernst August of Hanover married Princess Thyra of Denmark late in the year 1878, several months after his father (King George V of Hanover) died. One presumes that as he was already head of the deposed royal house, he didn't require the consent of anybody other than himself, for the marriage.
But although his father was no longer around to approve/disapprove the union, his mother certainly was. And although her consent was not necessary, certainly her opinion and approval had to matter to him personally.
Does anybody know what, if anything, the widowed Queen Marie thought of her only son marrying a woman like Thyra -- a princess with a scandalous reputation? After all, she had a past, having borne an illegitimate daughter conceived through an affair before marriage.
