Who are some reigning monarchs in recent history who had grandparents still living, when coming to thrones? I know that in the distant past, when medicine was poor and you often had minors succeeding as sovereigns, this was a common occurrence. Over the years, however, this would happen because of greater life expectancies.
UK: I believe the present queen is the only example in British royal history, as her paternal grandmother, Queen Mary, was still living as of 1952
Were there cases in early English or Scottish royal history?
Norway: King Haakon VII was 33 when in 1905 the country acquired full autonomy, and he was elected to start a new dynasty. As of then, his paternal grandfather, King Christian IX of Denmark, was still living
Sweden: I'm not sure; can anybody fill me in on this?
Denmark: the present queen came to the throne in 1972, when her maternal grandfather, King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden, was still living
Belgium: King Baudouin came to the throne in 1951, when three grandparents were still living
The Netherlands: Queen Wilhelmina came to the throne in 1890, when her maternal grandfather, Prince Georg Viktor of Waldeck and Pyrmont, was still living
Spain: can anybody fill me in on this? I would imagine there to be many examples, since a number of sovereigns were only minors at accession (e.g. Queen Isabel II, King Alfonso XII, King Alfonso XIII)
Luxembourg: Grand Duchess Marie Adelaide came to the throne in 1912, when her paternal grandmother, Princess Adelheid-Marie of Anhalt-Dessau, was still living
Liechtenstein: I'm not certain; can anybody fill me in on this?
Monaco: ditto
Russia: both maternal grandparents (King Christian IX and Queen Louise of Denmark) were still living in 1894, when Czar Nicholas II came to the throne
Romania: Queen Marie was still living when her minor grandson, King Michael, came to the throne (1927), thanks to the renunciation by his father (who would eventually assume the throne as King Carol II)
Greece: Queen Olga was still living when her grandson Alexander was declared king by the Allies, after World War I; later on, King Constantine II came to the throne in 1964 when his maternal grandmother, Princess Viktoria Luise of Prussia, was still living
Serbia/Yugoslavia: Queen Marie of Romania was still living as of 1934, when her grandson became King Peter II of Yugoslavia
Bulgaria: both maternal grandparents (King Vittorio Emanuele III of Italy and Princess Elena of Montenegro) were still living when in 1943 Simeon II unexpectedly became king
Portugal: as with Spain, there have been a number of minor sovereigns, so I would imagine there to be several examples; can anybody fill me in on this?
Bavaria: King Ludwig I was still living when in 1864 his eldest son, King Maximilian II, in whose favor he had abdicated the throne in 1848, died; so King Ludwig II had a living grandparent when succeeding his father on the throne
I'm less certain about the other German kingdoms -- let alone duchies, grand duchies, and principalities. Can anybody fill me in on them?
What are other notable examples from the past? I neglected to research France, which has also had a number of boy kings, or the smaller Italian dynasties (e.g. Parma, the Two Sicilies, Tuscany, Modena), or other deposed houses (e.g. Austria)
