Just found out that she went to King Neptune. Sure put a hole in my day. As much as I wanted off her when I was on her - I wish I could have walked her decks just one more time before she was put to rest. Then to know that I helped design the B2 that put her away - not a good day at all.
But I'll never forget after leaving Midway when charlie feed pump in fire room #2 gave us all a surprise - that day she was one luck lady as if the feed pump shaft would have hit one inch to the inboard side of the port 3"50 it would have gone into the 3" magazine while we were hot fueling the LAMPS hovering (as it was it hit one inch to sea side og the 3"50 barrel flipping the shaft some +300' to sea, then came the ensuing DIW chaos - but she survived - even if only on one screw getting us to the rock - Okinawa.
Or my radar dish getting chopped in half by the LAMPs Helo blades. Memories!!!
Of course taking out mooring boey #7 San Diego Harbor didn't make her screws very happy either.
She gave us one hell of a ride!
