Looking at other European monarchies there are some precedences. Daniel, the husband of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden was made a Prince of Sweden in his own right. When her sister Princess Madeleine married her husband Tim O'Neill turned down a title. Not sure if it was a title of Nobility or a princely title.
As more women become heiresses to their thrones it will be interesting to see how thier husbands are titled and styled.
The King's father, Prince Philip, was made a Prince of the United Kingdom in his own right by Queen Elizabeth II in 1957.
Well if a woman marrying a prince should become princess [her own first name] what about men marrying a princess? I can see that people would easily accept that the wife of HRH prince Edward is princess Sophie but im not sure they would easily accept HRH prince Timothy because he is the husband of the Princess Royal or HRH prince Eduardo of York as the husband of Princess Beatrice of York.
With the alterations to the line of succession and the introduction of life peerages it's about time they start to think about the future titles of spouses marrying into the family.
It will probably come down to William V to make up his mind about this as his children will most likely marry in the next reign.
As I think about changes to the Monarchy, such as Royal Dukedoms possibly no longer being hereditary.I have also considered that women who marry into the Royal Family should be made a princess in their own right either for their lifetime, or only for the duration of their marriage.
Other European monarchies do this. I believe the Crown Princess Mary of Denmark has been made into a princess in her own right for example.
Although I do like the tradition as it is now, of only women born into The Royal Family are allowed the privilege of using the title Princess along with their first name.
It has been my experience that the vast majority of people, some who follow royalty regularly, are completely unaware of the rules that only women born into the British Royal family are allowed to call themselves princess followed by their first names.
I'm sure you are aware how the press and other people incorrectly call Diana "Princess Diana" and now I see many people doing the same thing for the current Princess of Wales, calling her either Princess Catherine or Princess Kate.
I have even seen people referring to the Duchess of Sussex as Princess Megan! Although strangely nobody refers to the Duchess of Edinburgh as "Princess Sophie."
Just curious to see how people here would feel if this rule was changed.
