The War Of The roses involved branches of the royal house of Plantagenet- York and Lancaster. When the Tudors won the conflict, it became the rule that the Yorks would become the Duke of York and this title given to the second son of the monarch. The Lancasters saw their name enshrined as the Duke of Lancaster and this title is given to the monarch. the current monarch, besides being Queen, is also the Duchess of Lancaster. Neither are hereditary titles.
