History of Dukes of York since Edward III:
The last time the Dukedom of York has inherited was in the case of the grandson, great-grandson, and gr-gr-grandson of Edward III. The 4th Duke became King Edward IV, his titles merging with the Crown. Each of Duke of York after that is a new creation:
Richard, 2nd son of Edward IV (+young - one of "Boys in the Tower")
Henry, 2nd son of Henry VII: became King Henry VIII
Charles, 2nd son of James I: became King Charles I
James, 2nd son of Charles I: became King James II
Cardinal Stuart (Jacobite Duke of York) died childless
Frederick, 2nd son of George III: died childless
George, 2nd son of Edward VII: became King George V
Albert, 2nd son of George V: became King George VI
Andrew, 2nd son of Elizabeth II: has only daughters.
Traditionally the title Duke of York has been held by the second son of a reigning British monarch. George VI was Duke of York when he suddenly became king in 1936. I doubt that this title will be passed on to a son of Andrew if he had one.I believe that the children of Andrew, Duke of York now, would need to receive a peerage from the monarch.
