Once I remove the rust, I would like to be able to dip the lanterns in a solution that would be long lasting, not sticky or gummy to the touch, & not a paint product to change the color or make it shine.
I have heard of people using Minwax, mineral oil, motor oil, gear oil, WD-40, a mixture of beeswax & a type of oil, and all kinds of other concoctions.
I don't like WD-40, it will seize up any moving parts and does not last long either, it does a good job of displacing water as it was designed to do, but it's a very poor lubricant and rust preventative coating.
The mineral oil I have tried leaves a sticky coating, maybe there are different grades of it.
Any ideas?
John
