FREEZE BIRD SEED

Does anyone freeze bird seed when they purchase it and if so how long do you keep it In the freezer before you give it to the birds

If you freeze it, only take out what you’re using that day. It thaws quickly. But if you take the whole package out it can get condensation on it which can cause the package to get moldy.

I don't freeze it. I never had a freezer big enough to put anything like that in until now, and I keep the food in jars I can seal, so I don't worry about freezing it.

I bought about 9 months worth of food. I never mean to do that but I always do. When I had more than one bird I always had plenty of food in the cage to make sure they never fought. Now I don't have to do that.

It's not a bad idea these days to stock up!

Cindy had good advice. Keep it in the freezer, take out what you need for the day. Or thaw some out in open air, in a flat pan to air out, making sure it's good and dry and nothing has put moisture in the seed like condensation.

If you have those packets you find in prescriptions or other items that keep moisture out, you can put those in to be sure, but be careful they don't get into the seed cup for birdies to find.

I stocked up on Harrison's bird food. The cost almost doubled in price from what it was a year ago. Plus in one store I purchase from if you buy a certain $ value you received 30% off.

With the seed what I've been doing is keeping the packages in the freezer and then I take out one whole pack and mix it with my pellets, Harrison, and bee pollen in one of those lock containers and mix it up and keep that container in the refrigerator and feed from that on a daily basis until it runs out (for one bird it lasts a whole month) and then repeat the process when it runs out. Until recently I never thought twice about it until I read something.

Just that you should unfreeze it daily. It's funny my whole refrigerator is filled with bird seed.

Cindy AZ says the same thing, about taking it out daily. It does make sense. If you get condensation that makes the food or seed damp, it can cause the food to mold.

I was trying to remember, because this seems so familiar, and yes, I did keep food in the fridge, in the crisper drawers, in 5lb bags. I'd buy 20 lbs at a time, and put the bags in the crisper drawers, because I felt it kept the seed fresh, and frankly didn't have any place else to put them at the time. I'd still take them out and put the seed in the jars, when I took it out. I don't recall condensation, but that was the fridge, not the freezer. the seed warmed up very fast, and my transferring it right away to the jars helped even more.

There was no special reason for putting it in the fridge, othe than the fact that I had empty crisper drawers, and the bags fit in there nicely.
