I think it was probably typical of infant mortality during the 19th century, It wasn't just confined to the orphanages. Children from all walks of life died from diseases such as Smallpox, Chickenpox and the scourge of the 19th century, Cholera. It is one of the reasons why people had so many children, the hope that some would survive.
