Unfortunately it is vital to remove the ivy from the walls. If walls are sound then this isn't as much of a problem, but the ivy is rooting into the walls causing severe damage. The wall at the southern end collapsed completely. This cost £50 000 to repair. We appreciate that ivy provides an important habitat for a variety of species. There is still a large amount of ivy through out the gardens.
This removal is currently being carried out by the Friends of the Gardens and as fast as we take it down it grow back somewhere else
