But there is indeed lazynes - they also don't see why they should learn French or German (which they must from 5th grade) "when everybody speaks English" - which everybody don't....
Laziness. You sometimes need to be concentrated to understand one of the other Scandinavian languages. The part of Sweden where I live is not very far from southern Norway. I can understand Norwegian spoken by someone from Oslo or east of Oslo. I find it hard to understand Norwegians from the northern parts of Norway. Danish is much harder for me to understand. The Bornholm dialect is easier for me to understand than Danish from the main land.
While I have little to no knowledge of the Scandinavian languages (most of what I know I have learned from this message board), what would be the reason for young Scandinavians to speak to each other in English rather than their own mother tongue?
Queen Margrethe has recently given a short TV interview about Nordic brotherhood, which means a lot to her. Here she says that it drives her crazy to hear young Scandinavians communicate with each other in English instead of speaking their own mother tongue (Swedish/Norwegian/Danish) which ought to be understood across borders.
The interview can be watched here (scroll down): https://www.bt.dk/royale/dronning-margrethe-traet-af-vane-hos-ungdommen-det-driver-mig-til-vanvid
