Callum Smith works for Hyde United producing content for their match programme and social media accounts whilst also commentating on the radio station 26nil. The perfect candidate to give us some titbits on the Tigers for the latest instalment of our ‘20 Questions’ series.
I'll never forget my first ever visit to Ewen Fields back in the early sixties. Hyde beat Tranmere Reserves in a Cheshire League fixture. What started with great happiness for one player, ended tragically after the game for him.
Terry Gillespie had scored for Hyde the week before in an away game, on his debut.
On his home debut against Rovers, Hyde won 3-1 with Terry scoring a hat trick.
However on the way home with another Hyde player in his car, they were involved in a head on crash on Reddish bridge. Terry died at the scene with his team mate ending up in a wheel chair.
I've often wondered for decades now, did fate play a cruel hand?
For the game was played in Winter and with Hyde having no floodlights at the time, the kick off time was 2.15pm.
If they had lights it would have been a 3pm kick off. Therefore would the outcome have been different on the day?
John Nibloe died on his way home from a game too. 1964?
Have any other SCFC players sadly died mid-season? Bet there must have been the odd one in the early days when diseases like TB were rife.9B Stockport Edgeley, 9F Heaton Mersey
John died after playing at Newport. Nov 1964. fate again dealt a blow. He usually went in a car with Graham Beighton, because they both lived in Sheffield, but he was injured and didn't go.
