Hyde beat Tranmere Reserves in a Cheshire League fixture. What started with great happiness for one player, ended tragically after the game for him.
Terry Gillespie had scored for Hyde the week before in an away game, on his debut.
On his home debut against Rovers, Hyde won 3-1 with Terry scoring a hat trick.
However on the way home with another Hyde player in his car, they were involved in a head on crash on Reddish bridge. Terry died at the scene with his team mate ending up in a wheel chair.
I've often wondered for decades now, did fate play a cruel hand?
For the game was played in Winter and with Hyde having no floodlights at the time, the kick off time was 2.15pm.
If they had lights it would have been a 3pm kick off.
Therefore would the outcome have been different on the day?
RIP Terry.
