El Capitan

I have been thinking this for a while but does anyone else think having Bate as captain may be part of the issue? A young player, who doesn't have the life experience or football experience to perhaps lead when the chips are down.

Possibly, but there are various styles to being the skipper. LB strikes me as being the choice of ‘ lead by example ‘ type. Arguably one of the most gifted and skillful players at the club, and track record of being mostly available.

DC and the staff must have seen something in him. Perhaps also the face of the transition and the new way?

I don’t think it matters who is captain in most cases. Leaders will lead but we defo don’t seem to have anyone to rally the troops on the field when the going gets tough.

We need to find our strongest team first.

You'd think that Horsfall would be a nailed on choice for Captain.

By the way is Sam Hughes injured or ill at the moment as he wasn't in the squad last Saturday. He would be in my back three from what I've seen of him.

I don't think Challinor fancies him; didn't even bring him on when Horsfall went off against Exeter.

Whenever Sam Hughes has been called upon he has never let himself or the team down IMHO

Stockport County’s latest Summer signing is here, as former Leicester City and Burton Albion defender Sam Hughes joins us on a three-year deal.

The aerially dominant centre-half has spent the last four seasons in League One with Burton, winning the club’s Player of the Year award in 2022/23. He was offered new terms this Summer by the Brewers, but after the expiration of his contract now moves to Edgeley Park on a free transfer ahead of the new campaign.

We have experience with Norwood etc but no one on the pitch looks like a leader to me. Sometimes I think we need someone that doesn't just lead by example but who also can call players out in the moment. For example if someone is not under pressure and plays an aimless long ball (as happened a lot yesterday) I didn't see Bate or anyone calling it out. Sometimes being called out by your peers is more powerful than having done to you by your boss.

I agree no doubt Fraser is a top defender but for me the first goal on Saturday for them was communication again. We need a leader at the back bot just someone that leads by example
