No County tonight....

A rare midweek off for us.

Anyone doing anything football-related?

Perhaps watch one of the EFL games on the telly as everyone else seems to be playing?
Perhaps watch City go for yet another consecutive defeat?

I'm off to Curzon v Southport later. Southport is like a Stockport Non-League Tribute team as they have Minihan, Lloyd, Keane and Arthur.

No Danny Lloyd, no Jordan Keane and Sam Minihan only on the bench for Southport.

Festus Arthur played from the start and still looked a big unit. Jamie Proctor came on as sub for Southport and Sam came on right towards the end.

Marcus Poscha played for Curzon, but no Bobby Jones in nets.

Pretty dull game.

Very cold.

Poor crowd, even by Curzon standards.

Do you remember when Arthur (Dosser's nephew?) used to whack opposing players on their heads with his umbrella while they were taking corners or throw-ins. I never saw him challenged for these antics by police, stewards or the victims

There are so many stories about Arthur that I think the old ‘uns like Dosser just sat in the pub in the 1970s and decided to make up a load of stories about an eccentric County fan just to impress the younger supporters.

As a kid stood on the wall of the Pop Side, I remember Arthur wandering up and down the front of the Pop Side. A wizened, weather beaten, well wrinkled face. A few strands of whisky grey hair. One or two strategically placed teeth and invariably wearing a suit and wellies.

He loved having a go at the liner, following the poor chap up and down and IIRC his favourite word was ‘shithouse’. I got squashed once as the old fool lunged at the liner. No liner in their right mind would have got close enough to the Pop to have been collared by Arthur!

When was this? I first started going in the late 70s with my Dad, but always went in the Cheadle End seats, so never really got to see any Pop Side antics.

At what point did Arthur disappear (presumably shuffled off to meet his maker)?

The first season I started going regularly was when we were relegated from Division 3. I must have been a hardy soul as we won very few and scored very few that season (1969/70). I was always in the pop side for the next 6 or 7 years until switching to the paddock. Arthur was a regular, always trundling up and down berating the officials and opposition players. The younger element (myself included) were always goading Arthur into action (not that he needed much goading) as he loved to swing his trusty umbrella at anyone close enough to reach, squashing any kids that were standing against the wall.

He missed more often than not but I do recall a few 'hits'. A player taking a longer throw once got a good clout on the back of his head. He whirled round in surprise but rather than taking any action against Arthur, he just ambled forward to the touchline to take a shorter throw. I also remember a few other connections whenever Arthur got the opportunity. It only tended to happen once in a game as the players got wise to the antics but it didn't deter Arthur who generally followed the ball in order to get into position when he could.

In those days of course, 'violence' was a feature both inside and outside the ground. Like Matty, I remember the suit and my recollection is that he was a larger version of Arthur Askey (which probably means nothing to a lot of people

). There was someone on here who knew him and put more meat on the bones. It may have been SCB but not sure.

I'll watch Wycombe v Mansfield I think. It will be interesting to see if Wycombe can maintain their current run of form.

I watched Port Vale and Crewe last night rooting for PV who had Croasy and Richards in their line up. They were 1-0 up at HT but had a man sent off and Crewe dominated thereafter grabbing a late equaliser.

I believe Vales left back was signed from Stockport school two seasons ago. Slipped through our net.
Was top scorer in their Youth team, even though a leftback

Off to watch Grimsby under 17s play Lincoln City under 17s at Lincoln United ground. I suspect i may be the only County fan there
