A guide to the new A-League season

There’s a handful of County fans based down under, including Mike Wilson, who was born and raised in Hazel Grove before moving to Australia in the late 70s. The new season over there kicks off next Friday, and Mike’s put pen to paper on all 13 teams taking part.

I used to be a member of Perth Glory for a while when I lived there. (I'm 3 1/2 hours' drive south of Perth now)

Great set of supporters, most of whom had some sort of UK background so had chants similar to ones sung in England. One of the original Aus clubs from the National Soccer League days, the pre-runner to the A-League.

They had Steve McMahon in charge when I went to my first game in 2005, and a very old & slow Brian Deane up front

McMahon didn't last long, and nor did Deane.........I think the biggest crowd they got that year was @15,000 - and that was only beacuse we were playing Sydney FC who had Dwight Yorke in their team!

They had a purple patch (not because of their kit colour

) in the early 2010's but then seemed to drop off.

I enjoyed going, reckon the standard was about League One/Two level. Crowds averaged @12,000.

Now I'd say it's more like National League and the crowds are down to @6000.

I agree Tiger.
I watched Brisbane Strikers in the 90's and was at the 1997Final at Lang Park with over 40,000 fans.

My son watched the Roar under Ange Postecoglu win the title twice with crowds of 51000 in the finals

I have to say the standard has dropped and watching the Socceroos recently they look barely L1 standard. The best young talent gets drawn overseas though I do not know what Bayern Munich see in Nestory Irankunda!!

Used to take an interest and watch a few Glory games.

The standard isn't great, I'd rather watch a decent amateur team.

It was so sad to see his condition when he was photographed with Sepp Blatter.

Did he ever play for us though? Vas Kalogeracos, Jason van Blerk and Brad Jones have left greater County-Aussie legacies.

Don't know why, but I used to love watching Kalogeracos for the Ressie's ! Always thought there was a player in there but never really got a chance.
