I hear from my friends in Cambridge,USA that some radicals in the USA are now demanding the removal of George Washington’s image off all $1 notes , the removal of his statues of which there are thousands and to rename places named after him, for example Washington DC given he was a prominent slave owner
Mount Vernon was the home of George Washington. It was also home to hundreds of enslaved men, women, and children. He depended on their labour to build and maintain his household and plantation.
George Washington signed into law the Slave Trade Act of 1794 that sought to limit American involvement in the international slave trade.
It was only to limit not abolish!
Apparently Washington never spoke publicly on the issue of slavery during his eight years as president, nor did he respond to, much less act upon, any of the antislavery petitions he received.
In addition Ulysses S. Grant was the last president to have owned a slave and married into a prominent slave owning family. but his views evolved over time as he went on to become a renowned Civil War general who fought to end slavery and later, as president, championed the 15th Amendment giving African-Americans the right to vote
But for all his remorse and good works in later life he could not change history which damns him as a slave owner.
This whole situation is moving very quickly, where does it end I wonder<
