With the advent of the rubber tyre since it replaced the outermost part of the wheel the name persisted. I find the engineering of language as interesting as other aspects of engineering.
In the days of the wooden cart wheel, the main sections were made in four segments comprising of a number of spokes fitted to a quarter-circular arc which formed the rim.
These four quadrants were fitted to the hub and a hot metal rim was fitted to the rim, which contracted as it was cooled to lock all components together.
Because the rim tied all the parts together it was known as the tyer. Hence the spelling!
