Normally, if a motor gets to hot, it can be the result of over loading (resistance), running to slow thus causing less fan cooling of internals, too small a gauge extension cord, or, not enough available amps from outlet. Keep in mind that some other component could be sharing energy on that same line.
Although there could be other reasons, the above would be the most common.
