Hey Rodney, I do not know whether Cindy Walker ever visited the province of Alberta (in Canada) or not but it is my understanding that the golden poppies of which she writes in her song "the Blue Canadian Rockies" have been found in this province as well as other provinces (this despite the fact that they are native to California in particular).Perhaps some of the Forum readers in Alberta could confirm that or not. Cheers
I remember reading that Cindy Walker had never been inside a bar at the time she wrote, "Watching The Bubbles In My Beer." So, I'm guessing it may have been characteristic of her to write about things she had no first-hand knowledge of. But what a wonderful job she did.
A post script to my earlier post:a friend of mine suggests the following story line. The song 'Blue Canadian Rockies' was written by Cindy for Gene Autry. In turn,Gene was featured in a movie in about 1952 called "the Blue Canadian Rockies"in which the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were part of the story (Red Tunics and all). However, the movie was filmed entirely in California not Canada. One of the sites for the filming was the San Bernerdino National Forest where golden poppies are supposedly quite common. As noted earlier they are indigenous to California.I cannot comment on the veracity of this anecdote but in some respects it makes sense.Whatever the case 'food for thought' perhaps. One question I have would relate to the timing of the song....was the movie made to fit the song or vice versa or ??? Cheers
This song by Cindy Walker is one of my very favourite recordings by Jim Reeves. We have California Poppies growing here in Scotland and very beautiful they are, however being a gardener I have to say if they are not kept in check they can spread like wildfire!
