This is a stage performance shot taken when RCA was recording the LP later released in connection with the 1964 European tour (that also included Bobby Bare, Chet Atkins and the Anita Kerr singers), and hence they were using two Neumann mics, presumably because the performers moved around and they wanted to give them more flexibility rather than having to stick so close to the mic. The third mic is for the "house sound" in the venue itself. |
Actually, given the quality of the microphones, the sound they ended up with on the LP they released years ago was not impressive. Jim's vocal volume was not high enough on his songs.
But the photo, which makes its debut on "Jim Reeves: The New Gospel Recordings" CD I produced, is a good one and certainly conveys an emotional message with Jim's expression! It is a VERY different shot than fans have seen before.
The German-made Neumann mics were in use for several years by RCA and Jim stopped using the ribbon mics soon after the label began using the new studio on Hawkins, later called Studio B.
You can order the new gospel CD exclusively at the Good Music Store online (it is not available on Amazon yet), by clicking the link below the photo.
FYI the announced release date was July 15 (today) so copies are just starting to be mailed today. If you've already placed an order you should be receiving your CD soon.
