I am surprised no one has written into the Fan Forum as yet to comment on the new DVD set called "The Great Jim Reeves Anthology" 2014 edition. It features 30 live performances by Jim, a documentary, an interview with Reeves, a bonus video feature, pristine performances of SEVEN songs by Jim from the T. Tommy Cutrer show (some of which you can find on YouTube but in VERY poor video quality), the best copy of the Oslo show anyone has released, and footage of Jim recording in Studio B!
Plus expanded liner notes by Larry Jordan, along with rare photos. It's in an ALL REGION FORMAT, meaning you can play it regardless of where you live in the world, and it's another bargain at $24.95.
There is simply nothing else on the market like this anywhere. Years ago Mary released a truly awful VHS tape (put together by Tom Perryman, who later tried to get a judge to pay him out of Mary's money after she became ill, claiming he was owed money). But it was mostly those dreadful lip sync performances. Jim Reeves was an incredible singer but when he had to lip sync he was about the worst at it I've ever seen!
So what else out there can even compare with the new "Great Jim Reeves Anthology"? NOTHING.
I am not selling it on my site but the Good Music Store in Canada is and they ship worldwide. Click the link below to order it.
And I would encourage those of you who have already received this wonderful DVD to post your comments here. -- JULIE
I've been meaning to write since I got my copy of this wonderful DVD a few days ago. Just watched it last night and I was blown away! It is so pristine and his voice never sounded better. It brought back a lot of happy memories.
It is great the way it was arranged in chronological order, from the beginning of his career right up to the end. You could see the progression of that great voice, always good but through the years it got even better!
One time when we were together in Jim's home I asked him if he could sing in the high notes yet as well as the lowest of low. He said "Yes, he could". Mary said it just got mellower with age. I said "Like cheese". She said "Exactly" and we had a laugh about that, comparing Jim's voice to aging cheese.
Thank you, Larry, and Good Music for putting together all these rare DVD appearances of Jim. I just wish we would have been allowed to bring our big old 8-track player to the Flame Cafe in February 1964 where Jim put on 3 shows every night for a week and we were there! Just think how rare that would be now. But the Flame wouldn't let us. Jim didn't care, but they did.
Doris, you are truly lucky to have known both Jim and Mary. You are so right about his voice getting better with age. This dvd clearly shows that progression. I had most of these performances on vhs tapes that had been given me through the years, and they were pretty good quality, but nothing to compare to the quality of the video on this dvd.
Ok, I haven't purchased the new DVD yet, but I will say that it looks absolutely great, and I'll be ordering it very soon! Julie, I have to disagree with you about Jim's lip syncing though. He might not have been very good, but I know another big singer that was even worse at this than Jim -- Elvis! If you've ever seen any of his movies, he actually smiles and laughs in some songs where he's supposed to be lip syncing! It doesn't get much worse than that!
I have most all of these performances on VHS and the quality is not very good. I'll have to admit this is very good quality DVD. I really liked seeing the place were Jim performed in Oslo as it looks today and the commentary portion. It's a must have for any serious Jim Reeves fan and/or collector.
In my opinion, in this age of high definition, it would have been most fitting to have made a Blu-ray release of material like this. Of course, the footage is far from high def, but proper video mastering by experts could have made everything look relatively stunning on today's big-screen TVs, more so than what DVDs are capable of delivering.
May I count on your financial contribution to accomplish this for our next version?
DVD players routinely upscale image quality on a disk and it can be improved further with an HDMI connector. The more specialized we become with a disk the more we restrict its ability to be viewed by some fans with inferior equipment.
Why don't you wait to receive your DVD and see what you think of the quality. THOUSANDS of dollars were spent on licensing the video and then mastering it, I assure you.
