Re: Why jim reeves?
I never knew the man so for me it was his voice that first grabbed me. I was a youth of the sixties when it was The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and all the other Fabulous groups of the time and I loved them all. However my favourite singer was "Gentleman Jim Reeves". I have no Beatles or Rolling Stones LP's but I do have at the last count about 86 Jim Reeves vinyl LP's which are treasured and kept safe. Now all my JR. music is contained in my iPod. I often wonder what Jim would make of today's technology! How would he react if I said to him, Jim I have all your recordings on this wee piece of equipment, and show him the iPod, I bet he'd be stunned! Not long after Jim and Dean were killed I saw an LP in a shop in High Street Glasgow, the shop went by the name H.S.T. Continental. The LP. was Jim's "Singing Down The Lane" I looked at the track listing and did'nt buy it because I had his LP. "Have I Told You Lately" ( That I Love You )this LP. contained all the tracks bar two, Tweedle O' Twill and Love Me A Little Bit More. I can't quite remember the price of the album but I do know it was dearer than a British release, perhaps £3/10/6 (£3;50p )in todays money as all imports were and I could'nt afford to pay the cost for two tracks I did'nt have. Many years passed and I continued to wish I had simply bought "Singing Down The Lane" and added it to my collection. Eventually I tracked down a copy of this LP in Northern Ireland and was more than happy to part with £250 for it! It was with great anticipation I waited for the release of Jim's movie ( Kimberly Jim ) which I saw for the first time in Glasgow and enjoyed it very much. Now and again I put the DVD of "KJ" on and watch it. I don't know if Jim would ever have been a great actor but it was just great to see him perform in this film. To me Jim Reeves' music is timeless and with the dedication of Larry and his team we continue to hear newer and fresher versions of the great man's recordings. For that I send my sincere thanks to all. Colin
