Actually, I was thinking it was the other way around (Cussler's book was published in 2002) - that Cussler was stealing from / paying homage to / expressing admiration for Whittemore. Or maybe it's just a coincidence. You can see Cussler's pic on www.numa.com and compare it with the early English "Sinai" cover on this excellent site.

No word yet from Cussler's publicist. I'll let you know. Thanks for the reply (and the site).
