A lot depends on what you are trying to achieve. My house is tiny and I have an open cut out into the living room from the kitchen besides the open doorways. I do use other products to mask or get rid of unpleasant temporary odors when they occur, e.g. Febreze for cooking and bathroom. However, LI is damp and the house closed up for long periods develops a musty smell between crawl space dampness or the heat of the sun on the roof over the closed off, basically storage used rooms upstairs, depending on the season. What I described as being a general air freshener seems to alleviate that problem. I've gone through almost every type of solution you've mentioned at one time or another and the diffuser type I mentioned has been the most satisfactory.
