So sorry this has happened to your family. My heart is hurting for you. I found that Kaiser was excellent for my cancer. A second opinion is always recommended though. The reason it takes so long for a final diagnosis is the testing required. Once that's done it moves very fast. Kaiser uses a team treatment approach so that the doctors involved in her treatment will meet with her as a team. Kaiser also has a clinical trial nurse who can review current clinical trials with her and find out if she is eligible for any. In all my time there I only had one change in oncologists and that was because the first one had retired. (Unlike here, where my 3rd one is retiring.)
In L.A. county there are 3 designated national cancer centers: UCLA, USC, and City of Hope. She should make her second opinion appointment at one of those.
The Cancer Support Community is a wonderful support organization. There is never a charge for anything and there are support groups for the the person with the cancer and her support people (family, friends, etc.) Individual counseling is available for up to a certain amount of sessions. They helped me a lot, and I became a leader of the Welcome to Wellness sessions in which people are introduced to it. I'm still in contact with some of the women from my support group. They have some centers in the SF Valley.
