Some teams have worked their off season plans based on the expectation that we would be operating with 40 man rosters and have acted according to their desire to construct their rosters to that number. If they had planned on 41, perhaps some deals would have been different.
If we expand roster to 41 or 42 for opening day, for the reason to assist with depth in case of covid issues, would teams actually keep 1 or 2 extra players to fill those potential needs or just keep 2 extra prospects, who would not actually help in such a situation?
The issue of covid is not going away anytime before opening day, so we do need to address it, in a way that is in the best interest of keeping all teams competitive. How do we do this?
I have come up with the following idea. Please chime in with your thoughts.
We cut to 35 as usual, no need to have anyvextra players in January. For opening day, we cut to 40 as planned. Then for the 1st waiver wire, and that is usually a week or so into the season, we have our 1st waiver wire draft but do not cut anyone. There is your 41st player. Since that player would be made to conform to waiver wire eligibility, they could bot be a prospect, so whoever a team takes, WILL be able to assist in the case of a covid situation.
I just feel if we are doing this for covid reasons, that 41st player must be one who is on a major league roster, and not a prospect as may happen if we cut to 41 for opening day.
We would obviously still have emergency covid pickups if needed, following the procedures Seaforth last season.
I think this makes sense.
Thank you all.
