Re: Then and Now (1953/2023)
I got quite confused with the Orders some of the Royal ladies were wearing . The Telegraph reported that Buckingham Palace " confirmed that all family members were wearing morning dress with mantles appropriate to the most senior order of which they are members "... Alexandra and Anne are both ladies of the Garter , the most senior order there is . Alexandra wore her Garter Star and riband and then a junior order's mantle and collar. The order of wear for collars and mantles is that the riband / sash of the next lowest order can be worn. Pss. Anne in the Thistle, though it looked magnificent ( and I agree it was probably a nod to Scotland ) was wearing the Garter riband and Star, an order senior to the Thistle. She also wore three stars : Garter, Thistle , RVO.. with the Thistle place above the Garter star. It should have been below as the Garter is more senior order. She often wears the Garter riband with the Garter star and Thistle star, always with the Garter star above the Thistle star ... this has driven me crazy these past few days ...lol Previous Message Previous Message Another question, why was Princess Alexandra not wearing the robes of the Garter? Because the King asked most of the Royal Ladies to wear the Robe of the Royal Victorian Order. The Princess of Wales, Duchess of Edinburgh and the Duchess of Gloucester also wore the Robe of the Royal Victorian Order. The only odd one out was the Princess Royal who wore the Robe of the Order of the Thistle. I personally think that was so Scotland was represented. As the Duke of York and other royal males wore their Order of the Garter Robe (English Order).
