When are we going to have cooler/more playable instruments in our bands? 100+ years ago: Sackbuts got cooler Bugles got cooler Hunting horns got cooler Flutes are made of metal - cooler Alto clarinets - never cool
Our current instruments are way too hard to learn, to keep in tune for the full range, and too hard to lug around (trombone cases)
Who are the visionaries for our future students music education?
Invent me some new instruments please, because this 1920's band is so 100 years old!
I’d argue that in recent decades, we’ve seen the rise of electronic music. Things like the MalletStation/MalletKat, Electronic Drumsets, Electric Guitars, Synthesizers, and such have come since then. The electronic Wind Controllers are also pretty cool.
To be honest, the one thing that’s probably the future that we shouldn’t discount is the ability generate music with AI. Back in the 1900s, pianos became incredibly common in households and were the way the common man could make music. Guitars, harmonicas, etc. We draw far more of a line, I feel, to symphony orchestras in our staidness.
If you want to look at the future, you have to put some thought into the ‘Modern Band’ movement that many have begun pushing into. It’s definitely a descendant of the stage bands/jazz bands in my mind.
I highly recommend people go to the T.I.M.E sessions and check out some of the cool things that are going on in other states as far as music and technology. A lot of the AI music sessions at TMEA have also been some of the most informative that I have been to in years.
