New UIL Sheets

Had this experience on stage yesterday with my 6A NV band...

Tone
1 - Consistently
2 - Consistently
3 - Usually
4 - Consistently
5 - Usually

Technique
1 - Consistently
2 - Consistently
3 - Usually
4 - Consistently
5 - Usually

Musical Understanding
1 - Consistently
2 - Consistently
3 - Usually
4 - Consistently
5 - Usually

Rating = 2

This shouldn't be a thing.

90% of the 15 items focused on were not achieved at a 1st division level in that judges opinion. I would think that at least earning "consistently" for 13/15 would make a 1.

I think my point is that while the rubric seems to also be up to interpretation.

Do you believe that earning only 60% of "Consistently" is deserving of a 1st division?

Definitely a conversation to be had many times to try and refine how the rubric is used.

Heard a 6A band today on stage. . Wrong notes, lots of tuning issues, very dirty technique. Yet they got straight ones. I'm not understanding this new rubric. Band before them got 2's on stage and sounded so much better.

Actually this does not seem that crazy. You got 6/15 sub-sections put at the "2" level. This means the performance had considerable concerns.

I think this could totally be a 2nd divison performance.

How do you know that the judge(s) applied those exact descriptors to the *overall* performance?
Also, what was the judge split? 1-2-2? 2-2-2? 2-2-x?

The rubric and the judging sheet are two different entities. Did you receive a rubric with judges' marks on it indicating their descriptors?

Obviously, I'm a little confused about this posting.

I assume they’re referring to the new computerized system UIL has rolled out. It was supposed to be all contests, but due to glitches some regions apparently didn’t use it. It sets up to where you go in and select each descriptor before you select the rating.

My gut feeling is it will probably depress ratings, but some have said it’s mainly helpful when you’re on the fence with a rating. I haven’t judged with it yet myself.

That looks like a 2 to me.

According to this, here's where you fell short:

Tone: Balance and intonation
Technique: Even, consistent, clear articulation.
Understanding: "Usually" on style and phrasing.

That's been a 2 every year since 2s were invented.

I'm not sure that I agree with you.

That said, my post is more to illustrate that if we're going to use a rubric, we should use the rubric. Otherwise, just go back to the old way of doing things... it frankly made more sense.

I've gotten my fair share of 2s from judges with comments exactly like that sheet.

Congratulations on a great performance. The deal is, those designations don't necessarily work towards "an average" of what your composite score is. They may help the judge make up their mind but the overall performance determines the rating. Had that been me, I'd probably gone with a 1. But every judge has the option to pick the rating they think best fits what they are reading on the rubric. I even had 3 terminology thrown into that this time and they still gave us a one. I'm sorry that you feel that it's wrong and I understand why you feel that way. Probably should be a robust conversation at TMAA training on this.

Then this means the rubric is an inaccurate metric by which to judge and the descriptors need re-evaluating. If, on the rubric, there are a majority of 1st, there shouldn't be a 2 given.

I don't fully understand what you're after with your post, but I'll offer some thoughts anyway... 'cause it's Friday and I'm bored.

Your second statement is ONE of fifteen descriptors on the sheets. It alone shouldn't determine a rating.

In the situation described by the OP, the rating should have been a 1.

How would you feel if your point totals at area marching contest based upon the sheet added up to an 850, but the judge instead wrote down a 700 for your total? It's the same as what happened to the OP.
