What are your pedagogical blind spots with percussion?

I was speaking with some coworkers the other day about this, and it got me thinking and curious about our community's experience as a whole.

If you are a non-percussionist, what are some things that you don't understand about playing and/or teaching the instrument, that you wish you did (or would like to learn)? Or musical concepts and sounds that you have no problem getting wind instrument players to understand and execute, but you can't seem to translate it to percussion?

I will confess with my beginners I insist on good grip and hand position including arm placement, stick placement and repeated stroke. Students that were taught by "another" I usually just try to tolerate their poor habits. I know that from the beginning habits reinforce quality execution. I just know from experience trying to change fundamentals in older players usually results in "push back".
