Lyrical Grade 1

Howdy!
We have one new, upbeat and "fun" song for contest.
We've been doing that sort of thing most of my time here. It's high time we tackled something traditional.

Please recommend an old, lyrical song. Something that's been on the list many, many years. An old standard.

We are doing The Spacious Firmament on High by Haydn/arr. Sharp. I'm not sure why more people don't play it unless it's not a popular style. It's not necessarily "lyrical," but it's close enough IMO.

Big fan of the McGintys and the Ployhars. Traditional as in old? The religious works, Amazing Grace and such. Most of our core early lyrical favorites are harder than grade 1. There's great stuff that's more modern. Saucedo's Irish Air and Balmages' Tears of the Arizona slap hard. Maybe you'd like Broege's Theme and Variations? Oh yeah Finlayson and Chester and Scarborough Fair, oh my!

I can't enjoy most of McGinty's grade 1 stuff. It just doesn't lay the way music is orchestrated today - that and it was so horribly overplayed early in my career. You couldn't go to a UIL or a festival without a half dozen bands playing Atlantis or All the Pretty Little Horses.

OP: Here's a couple more.

Try Bleak Midwinter by Holst/Bullock, Ballet of Spring by O'Connor, or maybe the Sweeney arrangement of Ye Banks and Braes o' Bonnie Doon. I also enjoy While I Watch the Yellow Wheat by Daehn. First Light by Ticheli isn't "traditional" but it's still quite lyrical for most of it and is a Grade 1.
