What are some ideas for senior gifts?

We always do blankets with their name and year monogramed on a corner. They're always a hit.

We gift the senior drummers a used bass drum head from the past season or two. I use a cricut machine to pit their name on the front and I write all the different shows/years that they were involved in on the back as well as a personal word or two from me. I have the rest of the drummers sign the front. It’s a cool tradition that goes back to my old high school. I still have mine from 25 years ago!

Does anyone in your district get on you effectively giving away equipment every year? I'm just asking for you to consider.

I know that your gift wouldn't work in my district even though the heads aren't viable anymore after a year of hard use. Just like our PE folks can't give away practice jerseys - they have to recycle or throw them out. Someone would find out and complain.

I'd make sure you had documented written permission from your district level folks to "discard broken/worn consumable equipment as you see fit and necessary" to shield yourself. Given how litigious people are getting about literally everything in education, some rectal-cranial inverted person is going to complain that you're "giving away school equipment to the kids" and "wasting thousands of taxpayer dollars" at some point. There are tons of people just looking for reasons to be mad.

Our core teachers are required to collect consumable workbooks every year and recycle them rather than allow kids to take them home at the end of the year. It can be taken that seriously. Make sure you protect yourself.

All that being said, super cool idea.

Wow. That’s sad. So do you need permission to throw away broken/worn out drum heads? What about old used reeds for that matter? These are consumables, not equipment. Drums, I could see… but old trash heads? Come on…

If the reeds were paid for by the school, then yes, I'd need permission - if the reeds cost more than $15 each. Your heads can cost up to $75 each - that's a LOT to just give away.

Again. Better to ask for permission than forgiveness in this instance. Make sure you have that permission.

It's about the same cost-wise as a high brass player getting a free mouthpiece.

When I was a senior we were given duffel bags monogrammed with our names. Many of us still use them today (10 years later).

We give the seniors metal figurines with their instrument for senior night. Our last concert, we play the school song and gift them a t-shirt they can have signed by their friends/classmates as a memento.
