Housing portal opens on religious holiday

It would be nice if TMEA would look at a calendar and not hold any events including opening up the housing portal on a day when Jewish directors and teachers across the state do not use electronics as they celebrate one of the the highest holidays in the calendar. Same can be said for those in communities where they are expected to participate in marching contests on Yom Kippor.

Just food for thought and something to think about as we celebrate inclusion and diversity across the state.

Totally not trying to be disrespectful, but you can only schedule around so many things. I looked up the holiday and learned some things about it so that was nice, but before your post I would not have known it was even a thing.

I would bet it was not intentional. As I tell the students, there is only so many things life is going to accommodate for you. For the rest you have to be flexible.

You can totally avoid this date. What do you mean you can only schedule around so many things? What other holidays are close to this date other than Yom Kippur?

Indigenous people's day, for one.

IMO, housing should open October 1, regardless of calendar.

We are working under the assumption that TMEA is picking this date to open the portal in an arbitrary fashion. Has anyone considered that in order to secure as many rooms that TMEA needs for the clinic, one that is always taking place during Valentine's Day weekend, that the hotels need them blocked off so many months in advance to make it happen? And the bookings can't be made super far in advance as hotels also have to block time for building maintenance and renovations. TMEA may have picked that date out of necessity; it's not as "black & white" as people not directly involved (like us) think it is.

And if I'm not mistaken the date for Rosh HaShanah is not the same year to year...it moves; the dates are close, but not the same. So, maybe, another date can be picked, but then you run the same risk that you hit someone else's holiday (and I'm sure one can be found if one looks hard enough), and we are right back where we started.

Good point. On a lesser note: I wish we (locally) wouldn't schedule choir and uil contests on the same day. Really sucks.

man...no kidding. I mean, there are only 52 Saturdays in the year, and band gets 30 of them (according to my wife, and she's not far off). This is my first year to not have to go back and forth with choir kids, but I still have to chase my XC kids all over the state. It's a lot...

That's a good point. I missed getting to visit some exquisite beer gardens in Vienna because I didn’t realize that the Monday after Pentecost is a huge holiday (Freitag) over there and everything was closed. I grant you the housing reservations are more important.
