I am working on re-doing my handbook for the next year. I came into a band program that didn't really outline clearly some expectations and consequences if they weren't met.
While I'm looking at this (and I know every program is different), would you be able to provide in this thread your list or ideas of infractions and consequences that you have for your band programs?
(I.e. If students are late to after school practice, they make up the time with the band director. Examples like this)
The (district) Student Code of Conduct will be adhered to at all times by members of our organization. Any violations of the code of conduct will be immediately referred to administration for appropriate disciplinary action, and if necessary, may result in suspension or removal from the program.
The end.
As for late/time, etc, set the standard and enforce the consequences. You don't need to codify everything, or the very first time you don't follow your written policy, you've invalidated it.
I've taught for 20+ years and, about 10-12 years ago, I stopped doing this sort of thing. To be clear, I have behavior expectations and there are corrections for those who do not meet expectations, but a 1:1 list of rules & consequences adds another thing to the teaching load. If I put that sort of discipline/management plan in place, that means I now have to keep score of every time someone runs afoul of the rules and enforce the consequence to the letter. On top of teaching music, managing budgets, attending ARDs, inputting grades, doing T-TESS, and any other list of things, it becomes too much and there are some things that just can't be dropped from the "to do" list.
My philosophy is more about encouraging/empowering students to make good choices, hold each other accountable, and respect the program at the highest level. Each student is responsible for the overall discipline of the program and are dealt with individually when needed.
To your example, if a student misses an after school rehearsal, it's reflected in their grade and/or performance opportunity. If they miss a sectional, I'll allow them to attend a different sectional that is already on the schedule. If their absence was "with cause" and communicated in advance, they'll receive full credit. If not, they will receive a 70 for their attendance. I *will not* require myself to be at the band hall so a student can "make up time" for a rehearsal that they chose to not attend. Once upon a time, I would schedule a "make-up" sectional, but those became more of a hodge-podge of students and weren't as productive as one might hope. It turned into a "scale jail" situation and that wasn't fun for anyone, including me!
I have two main sections that covers stuff in a general way. It's not specific though on purpose.
"Disciplinary Actions: Consequences for not adhering to our conduct and attendance guidelines range from verbal warnings and written tasks to suspension of privileges, probation, exclusion from performances, or removal from the band. Depending on the situation's severity, other corrective measures may be applied. All actions are taken in consideration of what is most appropriate for the student and the band community"
"OUR COMMITMENT TO A RESPONSIVE AND HEALTHY BAND PROGRAM: In the dynamic environment of our band program, we understand that situations may arise that are not specifically covered by the policies outlined in this handbook. To ensure the continued health and success of our program and the well-being of each student, we maintain the flexibility to make necessary adjustments to our policies and practices."
Smaller school here though. But the principal appreciates how it's vague on the exact measures to be taken because of the flexibility it allows.
