Back in the day, bands played published pieces so the publisher would provide the copyrights. Soon, directors were modifying or arranging for band to perform at contest. During these days, many would not obtain copyright for their arrangement. UIL included a rule to enforce or reinforce integrity by directors by insisting that copyrights for music performed were obtained before performing. There are many ways to obtain the rights to perform, but it is essential for the rights to be honored by our bands in performance.
