Copyright and UIL

Im a new young director and I want to get a custom show next year. I know UIL states that a band should get copyright permission when using music that is not public domain. Is there a rule that states when copyright should be done? Is it before music gets passed out, or before your first contest, or before the end of the season ? Thanks for your help everyone.

You should get permission before your arranger begins work. That being said, be 100% sure that's the music you'll end up with. I once worked with an arranger who called an audible on music after I had obtained rights. I got a closer that was entirely different music than what we had discussed.
We docked the cost from his final payment.

I second Mr. Dude, but permission is supposed to be granted before work is started on an arrangement that is no in the PD.

Back in the day, bands played published pieces so the publisher would provide the copyrights. Soon, directors were modifying or arranging for band to perform at contest. During these days, many would not obtain copyright for their arrangement. UIL included a rule to enforce or reinforce integrity by directors by insisting that copyrights for music performed were obtained before performing. There are many ways to obtain the rights to perform, but it is essential for the rights to be honored by our bands in performance.

Honestly, find you an arranger who will guide you through the process...
