I used to do this when I taught elementary. I spray painted some shapes using a stencil and numbered them where the kids would sit. I talked with custodians so it would get waxed over.
One year I didn't get it done ahead of time, so I just numbered each spot with a dry erase marker, then I used a clear enamel spray on top of that. Wasn't as pretty but it lasted pretty darn good.
