What it boils down to is do you want to be married to your band and a trophy, or do you want to be married to your wife/family. I opened up a school in the 70's. I asked every kid I saw if they wanted to be in band. They did. I had a hundred-piece band within three years. They liked it so much, they wanted to have all day band practices at school every Saturday. We would start in the band hall for an hour or two, then go to the gym, for a while and so forth. It was awesome, but I came to the realization that my priorities were way out of whack. You've seen these Capitol One commercials "What's in your wallet?" You need to ask yourself "Who is my family?" I left that school and headed for the sticks. I ended up band directing almost 40 years, and now I am a church choir director. No busses to drive, no Saturday practice, and no waiting at the band hall after returning from an away game at midnight and having to wait for that one parent to pick up their kid at 12:30 AM. OMG. It's Saturday!
