Earning a 2 (or 3 or 4 for that matter) is definitely not the end of the world. I have taken two schools to the State Marching Contests and have had 2s and 3s in my career.
If you break a streak like I did, you will probably earn some head turns from fellow directors but eh, who cares. Do the right things, work hard, things will improve. The only expectations that matter are the ones you put on yourself, if you think earning a 1 is the only acceptable outcome then maybe you should look at other work, but I doubt it is what is actually expected of you from your community/school. Shake hands, say hello, build relationships, build good culture, and do the right thing. All of these are more important that a Division 1 rating and most of the time focusing on those things leads to division 1 ratings.
Lastly, talk to area band directors. Record full runs at the end of your rehearsals and send them out for feedback. Bring out clinicians if possible. Have fun with your students!
