Just a quick report on conditions Monday 08/10 – The Lady Godiver having the Monday off from the job managed to get out for a quick digging trip to our favorite wreck, the Delaware . After this weekend’s blow, me and a few other desperate individuals were dying to get out and try our luck – We figured leaving as soon as the sun came up would be our best bet. Well we were not incorrect, but it was far from perfect. As most everyone knows, the vis at the Delaware is at most times pretty marginal, so we figured the big blow would could not ruin things more than usual. As we arrived, things were a little bumpy but nothing this group of True Underwater Explorers could not handle, After a quick check of things we were tied in Amazing quick lolololol – it is nice to know people that know how to tie in correctly– It was clear on top but as we came down the line, the last 15 feet to the bottom was like a sandstorm, with lots of bottom swell. Well the bottom vis was about two foot and when we started rooting around it just got worse. I managed to see one small lobster and the hunter that was with us was disappointed but not at all surprised. After almost a 40 minute bottom time, a few little knick knacks and odd bits came up but nothing really special. I was hoping for another draw knob to add to the one I found a year ago, but no luck. My impression is it has been hit pretty hard lately by several different boats and picked over really badly. After an equally amazing quick untie from the end of the shaft, we were out of there, quickly checking out another interesting spot and then back thru the surf called shark river inlet lol – Not the greatest of trips but one well worth the effort after being land locked for a weekend. I remain The Bartman- mosb
I heard that bell was engraved "Waste Managment Inc" ! And since when does the Lady don a shiny red ball? Guess you are finally following the practices of the more phositicated vessels or maybe you set a mooring since you visit that dump twice a week.. Let me know when Donger is finished digging that hole so I can go fill it back in!
We saw you over there as we were seeing if the draggers left any fluke for us poor regulated recreational idiots... Did you actually think there was going to be any visibility on that trash pile? Must have had an important project... Was Bonger on board?
While i agree there are better places to spear fish, I would not consider the Delaware a "trash pile". For many years (in the past) the Delaware produced a ton of nice artifacts. Most recently a Bell was recovered by True Under Water Explorer Harry Maisch IV. You can read about Harry's great find at Dan Berg's http://www.aquaexplorers.com/Delaware.htm#.VcpDj3H4-ig.
It is a truly epic story of under artifact recovery that i am sure will get your heart pumping - and there is a killer photo of the True Under Water Explorer holding up his find, all sweaty and such!!!!!
Most recently i had the pleasure of working with Harry on his doctorate expedition at 100 feet in North Carolina. The project was filmed and I am looking forward to seeing myself flex my guns on film!!!!!.
I would say goodbye to your fluke if the draggers are working the area, they have mowing the lawn down to a real art. Please don't get me started, you know how they release the ones to small to keep, don't you? and they worry the recreational guys need to be regulated.
I hear next year NJ anglers will be able to take 2 fluke 19.5 inches in length between July 2nd 12:00 noon till July 2nd, 12:15, with possible extension to July 2 13:00 (for a total time of one hour) if the fish numbers support it...
How did you know the the spear-fisherman formally known as Donger was on the boat? - while he didn't get much fish, he always seems to recover something of value lolololol -Its amazing the things you find on this wreck old and new lololol -
The Delaware has a special place on my list of dive sites even if most of the time i cant really see much of it - I think the vis gets worse if they are dredging the inlets north of it as well
