Mary L trip report from 9/21

The Mary L got out yesterday.. We had some wide ground swells that ran perpendicular to the current and wind making for a less than comfortable day, especially if that type of motion makes you sick.... We visited the Northwest Barges first and were greeted with surprising visibility. Normally those swells really churn up the bottom. We had about 25' vis and a warm 70 degree bottom temp. Despite the pleasant conditions not much came back for the cooler. 1 bug and 1 small tog. Divers Beware!!! The gill net is still on this wreck and can be a very big hazard if you are not careful!

We heard some good fluke reports further south and a bit offshore so we moved to the Range wreck. Similar bottom conditions. We brought back a few more lobsters, tog, and trigger fish.

Once these swells drop off we should have some really fine dive conditions. I'm looking forward to the best part of the dive season!

Which piece of the NW barges, North [main pc] South pc, 3rd pc, snag E of the North pc? There has been a gill net on the South pc for quite some time. Is there a new gillnet your talking about?

We were on the main piece with the high bow section and the metal box on the inshore or starboard side. it's new this year, we encountered it this spring for the first time. Was hoping some of it may have cleared by now but it's still there....

Yeah, that's the North or main pc. Gets a little confusing, but there is a perpendicular pc South? of that high pc with the tank. If you swim off that perpendicular pc, broadside to the South you should come upon machinery in the sand. Easy to get lost but if vis is 25 to 30', a great way to get to know the wreck. Of course it's been quite a while since I've been there and things may have changed.
