This whole thread started as a joke seems some people either don't have a sense of humor, or don't realize that's what it was. Can we now drop the whole issue. People always complain when a post gets dumped by the moderator this is a case where I for one would be glad to see it go. In the future a sense of humor might help some of the people on the list. Hope this link works. It's typical of specialist user comments. WD 40 extended instructions specifically forbid any use involving possibility of inhalation.

Seriously I believe you and your passing good info. I believe WD-40 among other ingredients has some petroleum distillates. May lubricate moving parts and displace water, but not good for the respiratory tract. I used to use the "pure" silicone spray used for dry suit zippers and then let the parts air dry before using. Be careful with silicon spray as some may also have some traces of petroleum distillates.

Never use WD 40 for anything. It's hydrophyllic, meaning it attracts water. A spray on any surface will soon attract tiny drops of water. Any serious gun collector knows it's poison in a can. I use Break Free as a rust free lubricant, and silicone grease or similar nitrox specific products on regulators. Never anything in a can with propellants on scuba gear. WD 40 will rust metals and damage lungs. A gunny at Quantico threatened to shove a can up anyone's butt foolish enough to use it on a weapon.

What does WD-40 stand for?

WD-40 literally stands for Water Displacement, 40th formula. That's the name straight out of the lab book used by the chemist who developed the product back in 1953. The chemist, Norm Larsen, was attempting to concoct a formula to prevent corrosion—a task which is done by displacing water. Norm's persistence paid off when he perfected the formula on his 40th try. WD-40 Multi-Use Product fulfills five basic functions:
1. LUBRICATES: The product's lubricating ingredients are widely dispersed and tenaciously held to all moving parts.
2. PENETRATES: WD-40 Multi-Use Product loosens rust-to-metal bonds and frees stuck, frozen or rusted metal parts.
3. PROTECTS: The product protects metal surfaces with corrosion-resistant ingredients to shield against moisture and other corrosive elements.

WD-40 Multi-Use Product can be used on just about everything. It is safe to use on metal, rubber, wood and plastic

I was waiting for you Bart to counter about WD-40 attracting water. Yep, I've used it on wet distributors [before your time Bart], use it on my motorcycle chain after washing the bike and as a hand cleaner, yep it does get under dirt, grease and grime and it leaves your hands smelling sweet and soft as a moon snail's bottom.

No, I'm talking about WD40. The reply to my post was simply a Google entry. There are many WD 40 partisans, none more passionate than those who make, market, and sell the stuff. It does cause rust if left in a gun bore. It does contain rapidly evaporating petroleum distillates, so using it on any breathing equipment is a very bad idea.

I'm an antique gun collector, and the almost unanimous opinion among people I know and talk to is "stay away from the stuff". It does displace water that's already there, but the residue left after the distillates evaporate will eventually bead up with tiny water droplets and cause pinpoint rusting. It might be helpful to find out the views of military ordinance technicians, the people who actually have responsibility for weapons maintenance.

Pentagon procurement officers are another category entirely, and the rocket story is an old one that has undoubtedly made millions for the manufacturer of that stuff. I'd tend to be suspicious of any product purchased in quantity by the Pentagon. People use it because it the product in plainest view in every store. It's not to be trusted. Do some research on specialist web sites. There will be lots and lots of repetitions of the rocket story, but dig deeper.

The purpose and intent of Bart's thread is exactly that. Your probably not a diver otherwise you'd know that all life support is made of either stainless steel or chrome plated brass so standing moisture droplets is a non-issue. Nowhere was it mentioned, except by you for use on guns.

I've been a scuba diver for about 50 years, NASDS certified since 1972, by Kenny Cotton, Professional Divers, but diving longer than that.

You forgot to mention titanium and plastic as regulator materials. Real and synthetic rubber if you want to get more inclusive. Does anyone besides Atomic use stainless steel for first stages?

When I lived in Point back in the 70s I was in the inlet most nights between June and October when the tides were right, mostly at night with my big yellow Allen Light. I did some wreck diving back then, but have cut back as I've gotten older and less tolerant of thermoclines and idiots. Still, I was diving off Barnegat inlet last week.

Being retired allows me to do all my diving mid-week. I also do three or four Caribbean trips each year, and I service my own equipment.

WD40 is bad news, especially when used around scuba equipment. I'm amazed that anyone would spray a volatile petroleum distillate in any part of a regulator. The stuff is poison, and it can weaken or dissolve rubber. I mentioned guns only because I know the hatred for WD40 is so acute in that community.

Being semi-retired myself I was attempting to be polite drawing from my own experience. As for your last comment, put on your glasses, open your eyes and take a good look at the reflection in the mirror when shaving.

Oh, I still don't know what WD40, rusty guns, which you linked to has considerable debate and diving life support have in common.
No where did I read rusty guns but a film build up. What that tells me is LACK OF MAINTENANCE. Apparently these folks just spray on coat after coat after coat and NEVER break down and clean their weapons. But no mention of rust.

You seem to have adopted a hostile attitude for no reason I can see. Typical of those with limited educations who make invidious assumptions about other people and probably cant rebuild a regulator, thinking they are made either of brass or stainless steel.

WD 40 is a poor choice for ANYTHING. It sits there prominently on the shelf, but it's a lazy man's product.

See you in the inlet tomorrow morning. Either Shark River of Barnegat, depending. I'll be using my old Mk 5 with a restored D350, a 156 as a safety second. Meanwhile go back to watching Dances With Stars or whatever.

Unless you have to work part time at whatever box store employs you as a greeter. Don't trip over the WD 40 display.

No, I was thinking about regulators in general, as the statement was made that "regulators" were made of brass or stainless steel. I mentioned other materials, like plastic, titanium, and rubber. My comment about Atomic first stages should have made this clear, but I realize this is heavy reading for you.

Some first stages have diaphragms. The non-piston type. C'mon, you're not that dumb.

Well, maybe. Bring your reg to the shop when it gets a bobo, do you?

I do have SP 109 and 156 brass 2nd stage regs, but 250s and other composites predominate in my dive locker. I was diving a Mk 10 (brass)and a D350 (plastic) this morning. Rotten visibility in the inlet.

I think there are some two digit IQs here, along with some ugly dry drunk types.

This has been flogged to death on so many of the boating forums. Bottom line is at least for anything breathing it's a petroleum product which is never a good thing to breath. Other then that if it seems to work for other purposes use it and enjoy it. Advertising does a wonderful job of making any product the latest and greatest. As far as the legend using it on his speargun I've never seen him with one. Don't know what you'd use it for on his stick he calls a pole spear, but knowing the under water explorer I'm sure he'll find a use for it once he buys the can. By the way hate to tell him but it won't work on drysuit leaks. Capt. Bill
