In My Garden Today
Posted by Alvin in Motown, z6 on July 13, 2025, 10:22 pm
Back in the spring, I posted pics of the currant and gooseberry, when they were blooming. Well, it is harvest time, now! Really have to reach in carefully, with the gooseberries, because their stems are full of needle-like thorns, lol. Here is a pic of a picking...
Here's a pic of my PawPaw, AKA "Michigan Banana" Asimina triloba. It has been in the ground, maybe 6-7 yrs, but still not blooming/fruiting age. The tropical fruit tree relative is native to the Great Lake State. There is even a Michigan town, named PawPaw. Anybody else growing PawPaw, in their garden?
Here's a pic of a bareroot Starkspur Golden Delicious Apple (from Stark Bros), that I planted, leafless, last month. Now look at it! There are actually a few flower buds that are opening. I don't expect these to produce any fruit, this year, but I am impressed with its precociousness. I have other fruit trees, in the ground, for a few years, that have not bloomed yet. Maybe, next year, for this one...
CUPID'S BOW, Achimenes, spp., is starting to grow. These bloom in late summer to frost. These are stored DRY, in a dark place, in my basement, over the winter, in their pots. They return, and bloom, reliably...

I grew gooseberries before. Too tart for my taste. Never grew a paw paw although my wife’s parents lived there.

Alvin, I have seen that Fascia in California! Beautiful in bloom. Your Edgeworthia foliage is more narrow than mine. I love Edgeworthias! My mom had Achimenes. She stored them in her basement over winter . I did have but I gsve my PWpaws to my daughter. You need two to set fruit.
They ARE tart or sour, Keith. I don't eat them out of hand. Over the years, I have used them, along with currants, with sugar of course, in jam. Currants are naturally high in pectin, so less store bought pectin is needed for jam. Otherwise, the jam could turn out "too stiff or hard to spread". In recent years, I juice my currants and gooseberries, with sugar of course. The sweetened juice, is kinda like a "currant-gooseberry ade", and like lemonade, has a sweet-tart flavor.
Pawpaws are slow-growers. Earlier, in the spring, I posted a pic of a paw paw tree, I started from a seed taken from a fruit Rob sent me, over 20 years ago. I planted it in my next door neighbor's yard. I'm hoping that tree will pollinate the tree, in my yard (they need cross-pollination), one day. The seed-grown tree took 10 years to begin flowering. I've heard that grafted or air-layered pawpaws will fruit sooner. Pawpaws have been dubbed "bananas", because, when ripe, they taste like really ripe bananas.
I agree, Fred, the Fuchsia 'Gartenmeister' (I guess, German for Gardenmaster), is beautiful, as a larger plant in bloom. Hopefully, this one will get jarger, in time. I often buy smaller starts, because they are cheaper (especially, if you maintain a large variety of plants, like me), for building a collection with.
Yeah, I'm hoping the seed-grown pawpaw I planted in my neighbor's yard, will one day, pollinate the tree in my yard.
Achimenes are easy to grow, as a hardy outdoor perennial. Only difference is that their winter rest period, is indoors. They require zero care, over the winter months.
