In My Garden Today
Posted by Alvin in Motown, z6 on April 15, 2025, 10:04 pm
I removed the protection from the REDTIP PHOTINIA, Photinia fraseri. This is how it made it through my -3F winter. Redtip Photinia, for any not familiar with the plant is a BLE (broad-leaved evergreen)...
Recently, Fred posted a pic of a CAROLINA JESSAMINE, that was blooming near him/ He said they grow wild, there. Last fall, I planted a CAROLINA JESSAMINE, Gelsemium sempervirens, in my z6 garden. Carolina Jessamine is rated z7b hardy, at best. However, This Carolina Jessamine is of the 'Margarita' cultivar, which has proven itself as z6b hardy. It got no protection, other than some leaves that naturally fell on it, similar to what happens to Crocosmia, each year. This is how it came through -3F....
Right after Christmas, I posted that my holly plants had been "stripped clean" of all their berries. Check this out, though...BERRIES ARE STILL ON the Vicary Privet Ligustrum. These berries must not be as delicious as most of the other berries, to birds...
Here is a pic of a new HONG KONG ROSE or Scarlet Bells, Rhodoleia henryi 'Scarlet Bells'. It came from a nursery in Fred's neck of the woods, in S.c. (Nurseries Caroliniana)...

Alvin, your over winter protections did the trick, it appears. The redtip. Is that red tip ca er either susceptible to the dying off disease that wiped out red tips here some years ago? Your Carolina jasmine did well. The natives here are past blooming now. Variegated Mrytke would look good in my yard, lol. Is Nurseries Carrolina and Woodlanders related? The cardemine purple bloom is similar to a purple Epescia sp.? Nice little Sabal palmetto. Palmettos are perfectly hardy here and I see a lot of them now in rich developments. . I bought two 5x5 foot raised beds yesterday for 10 dollars each, a great deal! They are brand new. I gave the guy an extra ten , it was such a steal. I went to Lowe’s and bought dirt etc for one today, enough for one. I will see how it does before buying soil for second one. I will grow tomatoes , cucumbers, plum grannies and squash. They will go in sunny area of back yard since I took out two trees. I will post a pic later. I am we irking out more now and I am doing well with coronary issues, .
Thanks, Fred. Although I used the same protection methods, as in previous years, more foliar damage has occurred. Not sure as to the reason. Maybe, the two months of prolonged cold, did it. Last year, there were only 3 cold blasts, and each lasted a week or less. Nurseries Carolinia is in North Augusta, SC, and Woodlanders is in Aiken, SC. I don't think they are too far from you, in Simpsonville. Yep, Cardamine does have blooms similar to Episcia, but much hardier. I have another Cardamine type, too. Good luck with your upcoming veggie garden!
Aiken and north Augusta are perhaps 10 or so miles apart both are about 100 or so miles from me. I planted two tomatoes and one eggplant in new garden today .
